Fashion Week: the party begins in New York

New York’s 2013-2014 fall-winter season began this Wednesday February 6, the first phase of the great fashion week marathon. Festivities began Wednesday evening as VIPs graced the red carpet at AmFar’s grand charity gala to raise funds in the fight against AIDS.

Still saturated by contemporary women’s wear and menswear brands, another highlight of this New York season will be its digital capabilities – due in no small measure to the official site, which plans to transmit most of the action live. In New York, going digital is almost a matter of survival given the abundance of shows planned. In fact, running at the same time as the official fashion week sponsored by Mercedes-Benz there is an equally varied program on the sidelines, featuring the most highly anticipated runway shows (Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, etc.) as well as newcomers, and these have been sponsored for the past few years by the Milk studios, which we will be reporting on soon. Through their Made Fashion Week they add to the official schedule around forty runway and other shows that are just as much a “must” for the media and buyers.

There will be runway shows every day right through February 14, in some cases at the same time, featuring anything from 20 to 34 brands and designers (!). 185 fashion collections in all will be unveiled, ranging from extremely mainstream (J.Crew) to the ultimate in avant-garde (Rodarte).

The topic on everyone’s lips over the past few weeks is still a matter of complete conjecture: whether or not John Galliano will be making a comeback to design - more precisely as a consultant for Oscar de la Renta. We won’t know the answer to that question until Tuesday, February 12.

In terms of new fashion, New York will host the first runway show of MM6, the contemporary line from Martin Margiela, as well as the first Pierre Balmain show - the contemporary line from Balmain – rebroadcast live at 9 am local time on the KCD Digital web platform. This season the agency opens its "digital shows" to the general public on the web. Among the collections to be watched, there will be a particular focus on the fashion on offer from new contemporary luxury labels such as The Row, Theyskens' Theory and Victoria By Victoria Beckham.

The established designers Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein will round off the week on Thursday 14th before all eyes turn to London the next day.
